"On the July 2,1944 mission to bomb the airfield at Veces near Budapest, Hungary, Rutherford's ship took a direct flak hit and burst into flames. Our gunners reported 9 parachutes. Rutherford and Bullard went down with the plane as far as I could tell. I was flying co-pilot with my regular (Morel) crew in the lead ship #42, Flame McGoon, on this mission."

George W. Crawford
